Cellulite Reduction Q&A

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite is subcutaneous fat, or fat that lies just under the skin. Everyone has this layer of fat, regardless of whether they’re overweight, underweight, or somewhere in-between. Subcutaneous fat takes on a cottage cheese-like appearance when it pushes up against your connective tissue. Women are more vulnerable to developing obvious cellulite due to the structure of the fat cells and connective tissue that lie just underneath their skin.

Hormones, lack of exercise, a poor diet, or dehydration may exacerbate the look of cellulite. As you get older, poor circulation can also increase the appearance of cellulite. Also, you don’t produce as much collagen – a skin-strengthening compound – that helps give skin some resilience to fight back against cellulite. Certain genes may also make you more susceptible to developing cellulite.

How does laser treatment help eliminate cellulite?

Cellulite reduction is minimally invasive. Laser energy heats your skin, so its structure tightens. The heat energy stimulates the production of more collagen to increase skin elasticity and make cellulite less obvious.

During laser cellulite reduction treatment, Dr. Wahid places a tiny laser probe just beneath the skin’s surface in predetermined treatment areas. The energy from the laser heats up the temperature of your skin’s deeper layers without damaging the outer layers. The laser energy:

  • Reduces the layers of fat
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Improves your skin’s texture and elasticity

The treatment also encourages greater circulation to areas containing cellulite to help strengthen the connective tissue and improve appearance.

Dr. Wahid puts together a treatment plan for you that may involve multiple sessions and maintenance visits to help you keep your results. He may also recommend you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to maintain results.

Do cellulite reduction treatments hurt?

Dr. Wahid does make small incisions in your skin to insert the laser probe. He uses local anesthesia to reduce any discomfort during the session. The treatment involves minimal downtime. Usually, you need to take one to two days off from work and daily chores.
